Famed truck maker Mercedes-Benz has announced that it has built its two-millionth SUV, which includes its G-Class, M-Class, R-Class, GL-Class and GLK-Class models. Ever since the G-Class was launched 30 years ago, the truck company has been building a stable of large, capable SUVs in its lineup—including the newest M-Class, launched this November and reigniting sales of the popular luxury truck.
Mercedes also builds cars too, but don’t let that little distraction confuse you.
“Our entire SUV family is extremely popular among our customers, particularly in the USA and in its second-largest market China,” said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, vice president of Mercedes sales. “The SUVs today are an important pillar of Mercedes-Benz’s growth and have achieved a new sales record in every month since July 2010.”
In very un-Germanic behavior, Mercedes didn’t keep track of which SUV was the two-millionth—even for an entity as large as Benz, it’s a little difficult when the trucks are spread across five models and built on three continents. Still, the milestone reflects tastes in the United States as well as Benz’s second-largest market in China: if SUVs are passé in favor of crossovers, then luxury SUVs are still very much in vogue, and show little signs of waning.
